Syrian refugee children in Lebanon use Kano kits for the first time.
Since its inception in 2012, #GivingTuesday has brought together more than 30,000 partners—including businesses—in 68 countries to support charities during the holiday season. On social media, anyone around the world can get involved, and has opportunity to share what’s important with them with the people who are important to them.
On this #GivingTuesday, individuals, companies, communities and organizations around the world will donate time, expertise and financial resources to the charities of their choice — their generosity collectively bringing about real change. Kano, a computer kit innovator and GBC-Education’s latest member, aims to put computing in the hands of all children around the world. In line with this mission, Kano is giving the U.K. charity Theirworld three hundred of its award-winning computer kits to support the charity’s innovative new projects for vulnerable children. The kits provide a simple, fun way to create with technology and foster a lifelong passion for code, computing and the arts.
Kano has already reached Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. The first set of these innovative kits rolled out last month as part of a pilot project in Lebanon in a double-shift school to support learning for Syrian refugee children. Sarah Brown, Executive Chair of GBC-Education and President of Theirworld, recently traveled to Lebanon to visit these children and distribute the kits. She remarks: “The children were excited to play with the kits, build and learn about coding.”
Yonatan Raz-Fridman, co-founder and President of Kano, is excited to participate in #GivingTuesday by using Kano’s core asset to invest in education. He shares: “It shows that any organisation can do whatever they can – big or small – to help give children a brighter future.”
In addition to the project in Lebanon, the Kano kits will be an integral part of Theirworld’s new girls’ code clubs that will be rolled out in the new year in four countries across Africa. The aim is to create specialist clubs for girls to build, learn and create in a safe environment through technology and coding. The programme is a partnership led by Theirworld with Kano along with GBC-Education #smartinvestment Network companies Codecademy and Africa Gathering.
