The World Needs More Education: The Business Community’s Response

Join GBC-Education members Gucci, Intel, and Western Union to support World Humanitarian Day and the need for improved education access and quality around the world. They each have sponsored a word in “The World Needs More” campaign – so that each time a user shares #TheWorldNeedsMore #Strength, #Empowerment or #Education, respectively, from www.worldhumanitarianday.org between now and September 24th, a dollar will be donated by the company towards humanitarian aid in conflict areas.
Each company has demonstrated a large devotion towards humanitarian work, with a large focus on education and therefore selected their words based on ongoing campaigns.

The Education for Better program, sponsored by The Western Union Foundation, uses Western Union’s expertise in money transfers to support global education.  The program is a three-year commitment to grow young minds through grants for secondary education and vocational training.

Over the past year, Western Union has given over US $2.9 million to support education.   The Foundation has invested in diverse initiatives such as:

The Daniel Ogechi Akujobi Memorial Foundation (Nigeria) which establishes libraries in public school

The Planeterra Foundation (India) which provides education, job training, and counseling services for women and children in New Delhi

The Haitian Education and Leadership Program which offers scholarships for students completing higher education degrees

Interkulturelles Zentrum (Austria) which fosters language and sports skills for underprivileged children through the two-week MyWU Kids Summer Camp

The Lebanese American University which supports financial aid in the school’s Annual Scholarship Grant program.

The program also created the innovative Western Union NGO GlobalPay platform, which harnesses the Western Union agent network in over 510,000 physical locations to move funds quickly and accurately for education in underserved communities.  NGOs, government, and development agencies use the service.
