The Safe Schools Initiative was launched at the World Economic Forum on Africa in Nigeria, by a coalition of Nigerian business leaders, working with the UN Special Envoy for Education Gordon Brown, the Global Business Coalition for Education and A World at School. It was set up in response to the growing number of attacks on the right to education, including the kidnapping of more than 200 girls last month in northern Nigeria. Launched with an initial $10 million, the Government of Nigeria agreed to match this funding with an additional $10 million in a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown.
Since the announcement yesterday, we have had a huge interest in supporting the Initiative. GBC-Education has started a Safe Schools Fund to support programs for the physical protection of schools, community safe-school activities, parent and teacher safety groups, and additional measures and advocacy to protect education from attack.
