Cyber Bootcamps prepare youth for digital careers

One of AZ Cyber Iniative's bootcamps, held at San Luis, Arizona

Spotlight on the work of AZ Cyber Initiative, an Arizona-based organization chosen for the 2025 Youth Skills and Employment Accelerator. It works to provide high school students with practical knowledge, technical expertise, and professional skills.

In a world changing so rapidly, mastering digital skills will be even more important in the coming years.

That’s why AZ Cyber Initiative is working to empower young people – particularly from underserved communities – with the skills and inspiration to pursue careers in the digital economy.

The nonprofit works with companies, educational institutions, and industry leaders to help close the digital skills gap and inspire young people to become future tech leaders. That includes running Cyber Bootcamps to provide high school students with practical knowledge, technical expertise, and professional skills.

With more than 750,000 unfilled cyber security jobs in the United States, the bootcamps focus on cybersecurity skills and professional development through hands-on and project-based learning experiences. Other programs benefit educators, post-secondary students, and the broader community.

AZ Cyber Initiative has been chosen by the Global Business Coalition for Education to take part in the 2025 Youth Skills and Employment Accelerator. With employers across all sectors in the United States struggling to find young talent with the expertise they need, the Accelerator is part of a nationwide drive to ensure that by 2030 all young Americans will have the skills needed to find work in a rapidly-changing job market.

The Accelerator equips nonprofits with the tools and support they need to make a real difference in the lives of young people from underserved communities.

AZ Cyber Initiative’s vision is to close the cyber skills gap, build a robust workforce pipeline for cybersecurity and related digital jobs, and foster regional economic security in Arizona and beyond. Its programs provide expertise to high school youth and post-secondary learners aged 18 to 30. They include:

  • Beginner Cyber Bootcamp. A one-week introductory program designed for high school students to develop knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals and explore academic interests or careers in cyber technology. Students enhance their skills and professional development through practical learning.
  • Intermediate Cyber Bootcamp. A one-week program designed to build upon the foundational cybersecurity skills acquired in the introductory bootcamp. Training sessions simulate real-world cybersecurity scenarios, allowing students to apply their knowledge in practical exercises. It focuses on enhancing technical skills, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork through collaborative projects and challenges.
  • Educator Cyber Bootcamp. A program designed for high school teachers to develop knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals and digital literacy to apply to their lesson plans and understand how their content areas relate to careers in cyber, IT, and related fields.

Other programs include Middle School Cyber Exploration events to introduce students and their families to cybersecurity concepts; Internship Program for Cyber Bootcamp graduates that offers diverse work-based learning opportunities; Mentorship Program connecting high school students with qualified professionals in cybersecurity, IT, and related fields nationwide; and Leadership + Training Internship Program for college students.

These programs annually impact an average of 350 high school students, 30 middle school students, 20 post-secondary students, and 40 educators in Arizona. Through growing initiatives, including the US Cyber Initiative’s national expansion efforts, the organization has reached a broader audience of over 1,000 students nationwide.

AZ Cyber Initiative has already exceeded its five-year goals in just three years. Now it hopes that being part of the 2025 Youth Skills and Employment Accelerator will help the nonprofit meet the growing demand for its programs across Arizona and beyond.

AZ Cyber Initiative said: “Being part of this group will challenge our organization to think differently and bigger, exploring solutions we might not have previously considered. Engaging with like-minded organizations and professionals would spark new strategies and approaches that could be adapted to meet the needs of the youth we serve, especially in rural, tribal, and underserved communities.

“We are a boots-on-the-ground, roll-up-your-sleeves organization that prioritizes meaningful and honest change. While we are a small but mighty team, we are confident that with the arsenal of support, resources, and guidance provided by this accelerator, anything would be possible.”

By taking part in the Youth Skills and Employment Accelerator, AZ Cyber Initiative and the other organizations chosen will join the alumni network of 28 previous participants which collectively have positively impacted more than 250,000 young people. When they complete the program, nonprofits and their leaders stay in the growing network – helping them to work with others and get peer support.

Businesses that support the Accelerator have opportunities to enhance brand recognition and strengthen community ties. They can also provide pro-bono products and services to support participating organizations.
