Business as a Critical Partner in Advancing Education and Learning

On August 6 2013, GBC-Education hosted the last of a three-part in-person consultation on the Business Engagement Framework for Education and Learning at the New York offices of member company, Reed Smith. The consultation convened a broad set of experts representing over twenty businesses, NGOs, foundations, and multilateral organizations. All were focused on providing constructive feedback on a framework being developed by UNICEF, UNESCO, the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, and the UN Global Compact, to steer business towards best practices for engaging in education and learning.
A theme that emerged was that the combined forces of business can be a critical partner in advancing the global education and learning agenda. Amidst extensive brainstorming, the discussion was thought-provoking and constructive. Attendees were committed to laying the foundations for optimal business investments that would lead to real results in people’s lives.
Participants questioned some concepts that might limit the Framework’s relevance to business, and emphasized the importance of making a sound business case to engage in education and learning.
The group also never lost sight of the need to ensure the Framework, as articulated by Amanda Gardiner of GBC-Education Member Company, Pearson Plc., remained an inclusive guidance document useful to different audiences within the very diverse business sector.
The Framework will be a resource for how education investments could happen in a manner that ensures maximum impact.
The Guidance Document is intended to be launched in September 2013 at the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit.
